When you say foam clay, what is it that you are using? The foam clay I know is non-hardening.

right now it's a combination of a commercial air hardening clay and a home recipe. Hopefully soon it will be all of the latter at which point I will publish the recipe, promise ;p . It does harden although not to a rigid hard finish, just a semi-rigid one. I find after a few gloss finishes, this makes the sculpture more robust. I like it for the robust qualities but any air hardening clay is fussier and more temperamental (read fast drying and sticky) to work with than polymer clay, which is what I more frequently recommend.

depends on the critter but they are Very light weight. Designs that are spiny and thin, like this one, particularly so because for their 'big' presence they are allot of negative space.
