The 17-year cicadas started emerging last night. My front yard has been invaded! I feel kinda sorry for the bluebirds as the oak tree and their birdhouse has nearly hundreds of cicadas and shells all over the trunk and vertical walls of the birdhouse. Hopefully the nestlings are okay. Oddly enough, the back yard is almost completely free of the things. Weird. |

After all my hard work and pain (lots of pain lol) planting, it seems I may pay the price for breaking the cardinal rule in Canada: Don't plant things before the long May weekend LOL Tonight and possibly tomorrow night are supposed to bring "killer frosts" and so when I got home from my friend's place up north yesterday, I rushed out to put some tarps over the veggie garden. And not a moment too soon, literally, as it hailed not five minutes after I was finished! LOL Since one tarp is not flush to the ground (there's a taller support frame around the tomatoes in the way) I had to bungee-cord it in place to the fence and I was worried it won't keep in heat as well, but my dad came up with a clever solution: he gave me one of those garage hanging lights to hang from one of the tomato cages and let the heat from the inefficient incandescent bulb warm up the plants around it (they are notoriously bad for becoming quite hot which means electricity being wasted as heat, but now I shall use it to my advantage! bwa ha ha!) ( here's a pic of the 'tent' ha haCollapse ) Everyone keep your fingers crossed that my plants survive the cold!! And me too, it's been cold at work because our heating doesn't work at the moment!
